Arthritis and Mobility

Since arthritis affects the joints of the body it is a major cause of loss of physical mobility. Exercise for those with arthritis will keep the muscles strong and helps the joints stay flexible. People with arthritis can do simple exercises with periods of rest time in between, like riding a bike or dancing. Water aerobics is also a good way to keep the weight off of the joints and reduce further damage and pain. Make sure to consult with your doctor before starting an exercise program.

Arthritis will usually worsen with age, and so it is important to stay as active as possible to keep the muscles strong. At some point it may be required to use some kind of mobility device to stay active. Mobility devices can help keep you mobile and allow you to be independent. There are many types of mobility devices and assistive technology that can be used to help with arthritis: canes, walkers, wheelchairs, grip tools to grab objects, electric appliances for household use, electric wheelchair lifts and grab bars in the bathtub. Ask your doctor about a mobility device that you feel could improve your life.

Arthritis

Arthritis is a widespread physical problem and is estimated to affect nearly 50% of the elderly population. Arthritis is also the leading cause of disability of those 65 and older. There are many types of arthritis with the most common type being osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is also called degenerative joint disease.

The cause and cure for arthritis are not exactly known, but arthritis is affected by family genetics and wear and tear on the joints in the body. Arthritis is when the cartilage that acts as a pad between bones in the joints of the body wears down. Sometimes the cartilage is gone altogether and occasionally the ends of the bones grow too thick. This leads to bones rubbing together and also affects movement of the joint. Arthritis causes lack of mobility, as well as pain, swelling and stiffness.

To protect your joints from damage there are a couple of things that can help prevent arthritis and stay active. Avoid overusing the joints by doing vigorous exercise, instead do steady regular exercise. Losing weight is also very helpful, especially on the knees. Other suggestions are to use a mobility device, do not lift heavy objects, see a physical therapist and take any medication they may suggest.
