The Epworth Sleepiness Scale

The Epworth Sleepiness scale was developed in 1990 by Dr. Murray W. Johns. After answering each of the 8 questions below, click the calculate button. The higher the score that you receive, the greater chances that you have of being diagnosed with sleep apnea. The maximum score is 24.

Use the following scale to provide an answer for each question:

  • 0 = would never doze
  • 1 = slight chance of dozing
  • 2 = moderate chance of dozing
  • 3 = high chance of dozing
Situation Score
Sitting and Reading
Watching TV
Sitting, inactive in a public place (eg theatre or meeting)
As a passenger in a car for an hour without a break
Lying down to rest ina the afternoon when circumstances permit
Sitting and talking to someone
Sitting quietly after lunch without alcohol
In a car, while stopping for a few minutes in traffic

Although this test is not a substitute for professional medical diagnosis, management, or treatment, it may be useful in helping you determine if you might have sleep apnea. If you have any concerns about your health, the best choice is always to seek professional medical advice.
